The Wagenwerkplaats is the home base of H+N+S Landscape Architects. The derelict sites of the former railway workplace closed its doors in 2000. Initially, the idea was to demolish everything, but from 2002 the Industrial Heritage Foundation in the City of Amersfoort took action to preserve the place. The size, location in the city and the appearance of the monuments make the Wagenwerkplaats the perfect development location for urban living, working and recreation. H+N+S and Imoss jointly designed the masterplan.
In order to arrive at a supported masterplan, the Dutch Railway and the municipality of Amersfoort organized several public meetings at which users and residents could participate in discussions and ideas. In addition to the masterplan, a sustainability vision was also drawn up that provided input for the plan.
The industrial character and the railway identity are paramount in the masterplan. This is expressed in the urban structure, the public space and the architecture. The plan responds to the railway environment through the elongated development fields parallel to the tracks. The new urban development is kept free of industrial heritage by freeing up large green spaces in between, the 'landscape zones'.
The connecting green structure ensures cohesion between the different parts of the masterplan. A through bicycle connection and a through walking connection form the main arteries. Both elongated connections as well as the residential streets are designed as green as possible.
At the location of the landscape zones, 'the green track' expands into park-like spaces with a multifunctional character, where cycling and walking connections are linked. The open green spaces offer sufficient space for accommodation and for (spontaneous or carefully planned) temporary activities to take place.
The new Wagenwerkplaats has all the aspects you would expect from a modern residential area. For example, the location of the Wagenwerkplaats offers opportunities for the development of new, energy-neutral transport concepts. The car is a guest in the area. Parking is largely underground. The robust green structure ensures that rainwater can be collected and infiltrated into the soil.
To ensure flexibility it was decided not to make a boarded-up plan, but to leave room for architects and developers to give their own interpretation of the intended spatial quality ambitions. H+N+S and Imoss are currently working on the furnishing catalog with design principles, which will be included in the contract formation. Realization is planned for the upcoming years.
